AMD – It’s in Your Phone

Well not yet, but that is the plan. And I wonder if investors realize the potential. My guess is that Advanced Micro Devices (really their recently bought ATI division) is poised to make a bunch of money putting graphics processors into mobile phones, and this fact is not fully priced into the stock.

I wonder if investors are able to see past the PC market, when they think about AMD. It seems that all of the focus is on their competition with Intel. Meanwhile, the graphics card market is still ripe for growth. People, I think, finally realize that ATI and Nvidia supply chips for gaming consoles, and that part of the business is priced in. But what about the cell phone market? And the cell phone market is much bigger than the gaming console market. It may even be much bigger than the PC market, and with faster turnarounds.

My Past Predictions On The State of Wireless

I saw an article at MarketWatch that talked about 3G and how it has not lived up to expectations. Well, I could have told you that in 2002. I know that I said that in 2002 because in 2002 I gave a presentation at the Ann Arbor Computing Society entitled “The State of Wireless.”    In (more…)

Pay Attention: We are on the Edge

Last week (1,2) I talked about how the DJI should be breaking through the 12,700 barrier. We did not break through it, and I starting to become concerned. Some technical analysts will draw pretty pictures with lines in multiple directions, but we are hitting a resistance point. I like technical analysis, but use it in (more…)

Venezuela is Taking Another Step Closer to Dictatorship

If you have any monies in Venezuela I would think very very hard about it taking those monies out. Venezuela is taking another step closer to becoming a dictatorship. As I commented earlier it looked like Venezuela was moving in this direction.

President Hugo Chavez was granted free rein Wednesday to accelerate changes in broad areas of society by presidential decree — a move critics said propels Venezuela toward dictatorship.

The Tide has Turned For Microsoft

People who read my blog entries know that I am a fan of Behavioral Finance. I am mentioning this because I want to use the last sentence as a disclaimer.

Here is my grand sweeping statement:

Apple, nice knowing you good bye, Sun interesting language too bad it wont stay, Oracle go sail away.

Yesterday I watched The Daily Show with John Stewart where Bill Gates was a guest. Bill Gates normally is a geeky kind of guy and as many have said has poor presentation skills. What I saw yesterday made me think that the tide has turned. I think Microsoft is here to stay and people will overwhelmingly remember Bill Gates and Microsoft as good person. I think Microsoft will be a legacy that we accept and not regret.

Six Quick Book Reviews

I was going to write an individual post reviewing in depth each of the six books listed below. But since I’m a bad citizen and have given in to the fact that I will never find enough time to do so, I’m going to give a quick review for each of them here. So in the order I’ve read them…

Included are reviews of:

Short Seller Whining

I’m at an interesting position in my Crystallex (AMEX:KRY) trading. I’m thinking of making a $3 to $3.50 trade on the stock. I still own a core position, which is sitting tight until permit time.

Okay, I’ve setup the trade. Bought 1500 shares at $3.02 with a tight stop at $2.96. With a target of $3.40, I’m risking 6 cents a share with a chance to make 39 cents a share, or 6.5x my risk.

Some Interesting Details

Some people look at PE ratios, cash flows, and so on. I try to find the small details, small things that have big ramifications (1,2,3). Today many of the leaders that the West dislikes met in a single place. The fact that most of the South American leaders were in Ecuador was not a surprise. What (more…)

Diversification or Delta Neutral?

Kimber wrote an interesting post regarding diversification. BTW Kimber, no idea where you got the idea that women can’t trade.

It has me thinking, do you diversify or do you become delta neutral? For those wondering, delta is one of the Greek letters in option trading, and it implies risk neutrality.

The question is what do the big traders recommend? Without knowing a hundred percent, they would probably recommend delta neutrality. I myself trade for the most part risk neutral (not completely delta neutral). Risk neutral means regardless if the security goes up or down I win!
